South rolled past Slinger on the road, 69-47

For more updates on scores tonight, see www.sheboygan-press.com.

North 56, Fondy 47 after 3

North led 40-38 before T.J. Kellner hit two straight 3's.

North leads 38-32 at halftime

Derek Duessing leads North with 11 points.

Eddie Gilgenbach leads Fond du Lac with 15 points.

Alex Jordan has been a spark for North, drawing fouls and passing well.

Fondy is 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.

Fondy has hit shots at the buzzer at the end of the first (Gilgenbach 3) and second quarters (Nick Ford lay-in).

North-Fondy tied at 17

North and Fond du Lac tied 17-17 after one quarter. Six different players have scored for North, which has established its faster pace in the game.

Fondy's head coach Adam Zakos has been heard yelling "patience" to his team.

Check back for North-Fondy updates

Check back here for quarterly updates on tonight's boys basketball regional semifinal between Sheboygan North and Fond du Lac.

North is 14-6 overall, while Fondy comes in at only 6-14, but most North fans who have been around for a while know that records mean very little in terms of this bitter rivalry, especially for the Raiders.

Fondy has beaten North six straight times in the playoffs. And because it hails from the Fox Valley Association - consistently a better league that North's FRVC - the Cardinals cannot be taken lightly.

Oostburg nuggets and notes

Some nuggets picked up at Oostburg's regional title-winning game:

- The 46-31 final score is not indicative of how close this game was. In fact, the 15-point margin ultimately came in one stretch in the first quarter. After North Fondy took a 6-3 lead, Oostburg scored the next 15 points.

- Once again, teams simply collapse on Megan Van Tatenhove, using a 2-3 zone and begging anybody other than her to beat them. Once again, the rest of the Dutch jumped at the chance to launch open 3's with success.

- Oostburg point guard Kelsey TeBeest was expected to be the key to this game, matching up with North Fondy sharp shooter Tori Fink. Instead, TeBeest was limited due to foul trouble, fouled out midway through the fourth quarter and didn't score or have a rebound. And Fink scored 16 points, more than half her teams' total. The fact that the Dutch still won is a credit to the overall team defense, especially the perimeter D on this night.

- Next up is The Hope School, a second-year program with no seniors. But don't be fooled by that stat. Hope will run and gun you to death. Against that aggressive style, Oostburg's key will be its ball handling and free throw shooting, two things that didn't necessarily go so well on this night. The Dutch had 16 turnovers and shot 15-of-29 from the line.

- Oostburg coach Tom DePagter also showed his explosive first step. At one point in the game, DePagter reached for his water bottle, but it squired out of his hands and was launched onto the court. With play going on at the other end of the floor, DePagter made a mad dash for his bottle before the players came charging back his way.

- North Fond du Lac's pep band made a classy gesture following the game, playing Oostburg's school song. The Dutch faithful stood and clapped and acknowledged the Orioles' band for their effort.

Kissel celebration Today

Oostburg high school has a welcome home celebration for Kissel planned for 2 p.m. Sunday in the gym, weather permitting.

"If we can shovel our way in there," coach Steve Rogers joked.

Kissel cruises to third title

He didn't pin to victory, but it matters very little.

Oostburg's A.J. Kissel beat Duane Hartkopf of Crivitz 9-2 to win his third straight state title.

Kissel underway

A.J. Kissel is 1:04 into his championship match against Crivitz's Duane Hartkopf. He leads 2-0.

Garcia loses 135 finale

Brandon Garcia of Cedar Grove-Belgium lost his Division 3 final 6-3 to Manitowoc Roncalli's Matt Gille.
Garcia finished the season 47-6. It was the third time this season that Garcia lost to Gille; Gille beat Garcia 4-3 in the sectional final match last Saturday at Cedar Grove.

Empty seats

For the first time since I can remember, there are empty seats scattered around the upper deck of the Kohl Center. This is rare, because the wrestling finals are the hottest WIAA tournament tickets around.

I wonder if the snow the Madison area got Friday and the dumping the state's expecting tonight had anything to do with that. My guess is yes.

Entertaining the crowd

It's about 25 minutes before the Kohl Center darkens for the walk of champions and the wrestlers are getting restless.

A number of competitors in tonight's finals did leapfrogs over each other, down the three mats that will be used. It drew smiles from the wrestlers who took part and applause from the crowd starting to settle in. Perhaps it settled the nerves for the wrestlers who took part.

Brandon Garcia took part in the leap frogs, taking in all the experiences for a first-time state finalist.

A.J. Kissel watched and continued his pre-match routine.

The few minutes before the finals start is always intense. The WIAA runs a video of every qualifier as the athletes march in for the walk of champions. Even if you're not a wrestling fan, any fan of high school sports should experience it at least once.

Wrestleback rule at State

Count me in the "no" category for the 3rd place wrestleback rule at State.

This is one of the nuances of the sport that someone who isn't involved with it doesn't completely understand; I've covered more than 10 of these state tournaments and I still have to think the concept through.

Anyway, the wrestlebacks give early-round losers a chance to improve their spot on the medal stand and are supposed to provide a better representation of the top wrestlers on the stand.

Unfortunately, the rule hurts kids like Cedar Grove senior Nick Wendt, who pulled an upset to reach the semifinals (top 4) and somehow goes home with a sixth-place medal.

It's too bad for Wendt, who did reach the stand in his first and only state trip, but also lost three matches at State - in this instance the last three of his career.

The format also allows room for rematches - another flaw that shouldn't happen. Ozaukee's Mitch Lubner benefited from the rule, beating Eric Sutliff of Boyceville 4-2 in his fifth-place match after he lost 7-0 to Sutliff earlier in the tournament. According to The Appleton Post-Crescent's Pat Goff, there were 20 rematches on the weekend.

If you beat a guy once at State, that should be enough. A kid shouldn't have to rematch in the same tournament. And if a guy pulls an upset, he should be rewarded for that.

It's not the end of the world, but it seems like a rule that really didn't need to be implemented.

Early afternoon wrasslin'

Five CLC wrestlers got medals this afternoon: Oostburg's J.J. Froelich recovered from his first-round loss to a freshman by taking third at 103 pounds in Division 3, and Mitch Lubner of Ozaukee was fifth at 160.

Random Lake's Gary Pieper (189), Ozaukee's Shawn Flom (140) and Cedar Grove-Belgium's Nick Wendt (103) finished sixth.

Finals get underway at 6 p.m. Locally, A.J. Kissel of Oostburg is going for his third state title at 171 and Cedar Grove's Brandon Garcia is going for No. 1 at 135.

We'll provide updates as the events proceed.

Quick work for Kissel

Oostburg's A.J. Kissel needed all of 32 seconds to pin Markesan's Eric Schwandt in a Division 3 quarterfinal at 17 1 pounds.
Kissel got a takedown about 4 seconds into the match, and also got a fan in Schwandt, who's only goal was not to get pinned by the two-time state champion.
"He's the most aggressive wrestler I've ever seen," said Schwandt (28-10).
Schwandt knew what he was up against when finding out he was paired against Kissel (41-0), who has pinned 30 opponents this season and has 116 for his career, ranking him second all-time in the state.
"He intimidated me," Schwandt said. "He walks around in warmups, slaps his legs, and lets you know who's boss. He doesn't look as strong as he is, but he must work out a lot.
"He's also a great guy, wishing me luck after the match. I'm pulling for him."

- Dave Lubach

Good day for Cedar Grove, Falls struggling

Cedar Grove-Belgium got its second wrestler into tonight's finals when sophomore Brandon Garcia pinned Stratford's Kevin Bubolz in 1:44 at 135 pounds. He faces Zeb Secrist of Cochran Fountain City-Alma (44-1). Garcia joins Nick Wendt (103) in the finals.

Senior Jon Walvoord, who finished third at 112 last year, was pinned in his quarterfinal match and will try to wrestleback to third this year.

Meanwhile, Sheboygan Falls, which qualified the most area wrestlers, is struggling. All six Falcons who competed Thursday lost, and the string has continued today. Freshman 103 pounder Nathan Brown lost his quarterfinal 10-0 and Tony Johnson suffered his second loss of the season with a 4-1 loss to Tony Madigan of Lodi. Brown and Johnson wrestle later today in consolations and can still take thirds, but the state meet so far has to be a disappointment for coach Fred Brown.

Surprises at Division 3 103

It was assumed at least one Division 3 wrestler from the area would be in tonight's semifinal matches.
There is one, but not the senior everyone expected.
Oostburg's J.J. Froelich, the state's top-ranked 103-pounder in Division 3, was upset 5-4 by Bubba Gudis of Bruce in the quarterfinals.
But the area wasn't shut out of the semis in that class. Cedar Grove-Belgium's Nick Wendt, who only started wrestling two years ago and is at State for the first time, advanced with a 4-2 win over Justin Rikkola of St. Croix Falls.
Wendt got a reversal with 10 seconds left in the match to break a 2-2 deadlock.

Live, from the Kohl Center

They've already been wrestling a couple of hours in Madison at the WIAA state tournament.

Two Plymouth wrestlers have competed in consolation matches. Kale Rortvedt was eliminated at 119 pounds after being pinned in his first match today.

Chris Holzer continued on with a 43-second pin of Stoughton's Josh Miller. Holzer can still get a third-place medal through wrestlebacks in Division 1's 130 pounds.

Quarterfinals for Divisions 2 and 3 are starting now. Check back later for updates.

North gametime also changed

Just got off the phone with Sheboygan North AD Dan Stengel. The first thing he said, before hello, was "1:30."

North's home game against West Bend West will now be at 1:30 p.m., because of the weather.

Now, Oostburg is the only game still scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Game times, they are a changin'

Due to bad weather expected to hit the area Saturday night, WIAA girls basketball regional final games are changing times by the bushel.

Game that were originally scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday night are moving to afternoon times to avoid the brunt of the coming snowstorm.

- In this area, that includes Sheboygan South's D1 game at West Bend East, which will now be at 1 p.m.
- Sheboygan Falls' game at Fond du Lac will be at 1 p.m.
- Sheboygan Christian's game at Milwaukee Pius is set for 1:30 p.m.

Sheboygan North's home game and Oostburg's neutral site game (at Sheb. Falls) are both still scheduled for 7 p.m. We'll post any more changes if they occur tonight.
