It was assumed at least one Division 3 wrestler from the area would be in tonight's semifinal matches.
There is one, but not the senior everyone expected.
Oostburg's J.J. Froelich, the state's top-ranked 103-pounder in Division 3, was upset 5-4 by Bubba Gudis of Bruce in the quarterfinals.
But the area wasn't shut out of the semis in that class. Cedar Grove-Belgium's Nick Wendt, who only started wrestling two years ago and is at State for the first time, advanced with a 4-2 win over Justin Rikkola of St. Croix Falls.
Wendt got a reversal with 10 seconds left in the match to break a 2-2 deadlock.
